I intend to get rock art off of the cover and into the art history text* — to finally see rock art get the treatment we lavish upon other arts. Such intellectual rigor and critical engagement is the heart of contemporary art history. Some of the ideas to move us in that direction will be drafted and tested here.
This integration of rock art and art history began when I was working on my Ph.D. in pre-Columbian art history at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA). For more about how I got there see my BIO , and for what I’ve done since see my current cv.
* For the original “Off the Cover and into the Book” idea, see David S. Whitley’s introductory essay in New Light on Old Art: Recent Advances in Hunter-Gatherer Rock Art Research, that he and Lawrence L. Loendorf edited in 1994.
